>> You went to Tranny Bingo at a Sydney pub the other week. Are you a fan?
A friend of mine said come down and check it out. It was good fun. I didn’t win, but.

>> Whose couch are you sleeping on this time?
I’ve got my own bed now. I live in Hawaii. I’ve got a house there.

>> On the evidence of your new film, Man on a Ledge, you’re not afraid of heights.
Falling was the only thing I was afraid of. And landing. That would have been the hard bit. The longer I was out there, the more confident I got.

>> When you stepped out on to the ledge, was it how you had imagined?
It’s weird. It’s a lot higher than your brain can imagine. It doesn’t seem real, almost. The adrenalin is trying to keep it all together, so it just looks like a weird painting.

>> How much time did you spend up and out there?
Weeks. The first time I went out there was the first time we filmed. I got lucky in that I didn’t burst into tears or curl up in a ball or something. It would have been a different start to the movie.You can’t prepare for something like that. You can’t practise.

>> The look on your face does seem pretty authentic.
I was 200 feet (61m) up in the air. It’s all real. We shot 80 per cent of the film on that ledge.

>> There must have been some kind of harness.
It’s a safety clip, so if you do slip, which happened a couple of times, or lose your footing, it just snaps like a seat belt.

>> Where’s the camera?
You had technocranes going. You had guys on the ledge with you. Guys jumping out from the ledge. The more adventurous I got, the more ambitious we all could become. So in the end you could run up and down and those guys could come with you.

>> What’s the appeal of a film in which you’re confined to one space?
The appeal overall was that it was a fun popcorn film. It’s a simple action movie where the guy is rooted to the spot.

>> You said you’d like to do a comedy with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale next.
It was just a quip to make people laugh. But I wouldn’t mind making a dance movie. My agent thinks I am nuts.

>> Haven’t you done that already with Tap Dogs?
I did a few dance scenes – they trained me up – but not as much as I would like to.

>> Is it true that for the Avatar sequel, James Cameron wants to take you under the sea?
He’s given me dive lessons and scuba gear for my birthday. I think they are all part of his master plan. I have yet to actually do them.

>> Have you asked Richard Roxburgh about going underwater on Sanctum?
I have heard stories. I am a bit cautious about underwater stuff. Not because of what’s under the water, but I find it a weird concept to breathe underwater. It’s something humans aren’t meant to do. It’s like being up on a ledge – that’s where pigeons live.

>> Talking about things people aren’t meant to do – we’ll see you reprise the role of Perseus in Wrath of the Titans in March. The first film wasn’t well received. Why go back?
I personally didn’t like what I did in the first movie. I have been very vocal about that. I think I dropped the ball. To get a chance to go back was exciting, but I also think the audience deserved it. With hindsight, I realised I could have done a lot better.

>> Are you happy with your choices post-Avatar and Terminator Salvation?
I do movies that I would like to go and see. That’s it. There’s no grand plan. You can’t formulate your career, because you don’t know what’s going to work and what isn’t. But I get something from every single one of the movies I do.

>> You said you were arrogant at the beginning of your career. What changed?
I’m growing up. I am 35. When you are 25, you think you can rule the world. When you are 35, you just go, ‘Here I am, warts and all’.

>> Does that make you a better actor?
You get a bit more courageous as you go forward. I still look at myself as an infant in this industry. But the choices you make in regard to your performance or the films you want to go and do, you become less fearful. You have to.

>> You’ve just shot Drift in WA. Do you surf in that?
I surf in some scenes. Most of the time, I don’t. I said I didn’t want to. Because it’s not about me. It’s about Myles (Pollard) and Xavier (Samuel), they are the leads and I am there to support that.

>> Xavier says he got quite good at surfing.
They all did – considering the size of the waves we were in. It was ridiculous. There were 30 foot (9m) swells we got dropped in out the back.

>> Your next project is an Iraq war movie, correct?
It’s a true story about 300 tanks that did a ‘thunder run’ through Baghdad. It’s a captivating story. But you can’t logistically do a movie that size – the budget would be prohibitive – so there’s this motion-capture way of doing it.

If it works, it’s going to be fantastic. It’s high risk, but I’d rather be part of something like that than playing it safe.

The Australian actor had dreadlocks in his late teenage years, and he admits it may have looked like the former ‘Friends’ star did when she was famed for her voluminous shoulder-length cut in the 90s.

Discussing his role in ‘Clash of the Titans’, Sam told Empire magazine: “Honestly, more was made about my f**king hair in this movie than anyone’s in the whole world – apart from maybe Jennifer Aniston when she had that haircut in ‘Friends’ and the whole f**king world copied.

“In fact, I think I had that style too; dreadlocks in the style of Jennifer Aniston when I was 16 to 20.”

Sam – currently starring in movie ‘Man on a Ledge’ – admits he is delighted to be reprising the role of Perseus in the follow-up ‘Wrath of the Titans’ because of the critical mauling the first film received.

He said: “I read a lot of reviews and everyone thought I looked like a f**king idiot. More was written about my hair than anything else.”

Sam Worthington talk with Nydailynews about working out and gym and about his movie “Man on a Ledge” then “Wrath of the Titans”

For a guy who normally fights monsters, machines and even gods, the appeal of this role was in its immobility.

“I like that this is an action movie where the main character is rooted to one spot, I wanted a simple movie with a basic premise that everyone could understand and enjoy for 90 minutes.”

“In the first movie, I felt that Perseus was just an action conduit with a shaved head. There wasn’t a lot of character there. This time we sat down and really developed his character as an old gunslinger who hasn’t picked up his sword in 10 years and has to go back and rescue his town.”

Which is the main reason Worthington enjoyed filming ‘Man on a Ledge’ so much. There were few stunts or action sequences that required the actor to stay in shape. Because if there is one thing that Sam Worthington hates, it’s working out.

“I hate the gym” he says before heading off to eat dinner with his girlfriend.

“If you notice, I don’t really take my shirt off in my movies because I’m not as fit as I should be. I guess I’m just not a fan of picking up something heavy and not moving it. I’d rather walk around town. I’ll take that kind of exercise any day.”

“I guess my fear of heights is really a fear of falling and landing in a splat,” says the 35-year-old Aussie hunk, who stood some 200 feet up, out the window of New York’s Roosevelt Hotel, to play the title role in “Man on a Ledge.”

“That’s why I was so pleased that the first time I went out on the ledge, I didn’t burst into tears crying, ‘I don’t want to do this movie! Somebody call my agent!’ ”

In the movie, now showing, the “Avatar” star is a cop who is framed for a jewel heist. Sent to jail for 30 years, he gets a day pass for his father’s funeral.

He ditches the police and checks into a luxury hotel, where he orders his “last meal” and gets out on the ledge. A police pyschologist (Elizabeth Banks) is sent to talk him down.

“You just couldn’t do this in a studio, or it would look fake,” Worthington said. “The audience would see through it in a minute.”

He didn’t really worry about his safety. “I had on cables, and there were safety measures, Still, I was sweating a lot and breathing hard.”

“I was told, ‘Just trust us. We have you if you slip.’ Every now and then, I’d slip on the ledge or stumble. When you slip off, it was like hanging there like a puppet, and then the stunt team just drags you back up.”

Wait — you really slipped? “Oh, it’s easy to lose your footing,” he says with a grin. “The ledge is only 17 inches wide.

“The problem is you look down, and it’s not like a swirling Hitchcock vertigo. Your brain still can’t really take it in. The people below look like a portrait, and it gets blurry.

“Then you have the people yelling, ‘Jump, jump, jump!’ I guess those were some of my disgruntled fans from my last movie. They really meant to say, ‘Jump, Sam! We’ve had enough of you!’ ”

He also had to deal with the NYC weather.

“We shot in December, and it got icy up on the ledge,” Worthington says. “You also have to worry about the pigeons. Basically, you’re the intruder because the ledge is the birds’ home. I guess my head looked like one big egg to them. I looked like a nest, too.”

Banks backs that up. “The day he showed up for rehearsal, he was late, and his hair was a disaster,” Worthington’s co-star says. “He wore a ratty T-shirt that looked like he pulled it out of a laundry bin. He carried his script to the set in a Walgreens plastic bag. He looked like a homeless man.”

Worthington knows when he’s making lofty movies — and when he’s not. “This is unashamedly a popcorn movie,” he says of “Ledge.” “That’s why I wanted to do it. It’s like ‘The Negotiator’ or ‘Phone Booth.’ ”

Worthington didn’t always speak from such lofty perches. He grew up Down Under in Perth and graduated from Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art. By age 22, he was on stage and then Aussie TV with the series “Water Rats” (1996).

Between roles, he worked as a bricklayer. Eventually, he received big-screen notice for his 2002 film “Hart’s War.”

His career breakthrough came from playing Jake Sully in “Avatar” (2009) after Jake Gyllenhaal and Matt Damon reportedly turned down the role.

Since then, Worthington has had “Terminator Salvation” (2009), “The Debt” (2010) and “Texas Killing Fields” (2011).

After defeating the Kraken in “Clash of the Titans” (2010), Worthington returns to the role of Perseus for “Wrath of the Titans,” out March 30.

“When I look back in hindsight, I think [‘Clash’ is] too generic and bland,” Worthington says. “I’m the shaved-head action guy in that film. For the sequel, I sat down with the director and mapped out who Perseus is as a man and as a hero. I wanted to show a character that garnered empathy from the audience rather than people saying it could be played by anyone.

“Frankly, I f—ed up on the first one, but I have more leverage now as an actor,” he says. “I got lucky where I could do a sequel where I had a say and could rectify the mistakes I made the last time.”

He won’t be offering suggestions to James Cameron for the “Avatar” sequel that’s in the offing. “It’s not like I will say, ‘I’ve got some idea for the sequel,’ ” Worthington says with a laugh. “I can imagine him saying, ‘Oh, you do, Sam? You can easily be replaced.’ ”

In his spare time, Worthington avoids action-star behavior. “I don’t really like the gym. I try now to put that fact into my characters,” he says. “It’s like Perseus hurts his bum and complains.

“In fact, my girlfriend watched ‘Wrath’ and said, ‘Sam, you run really funny. You look out of breath and out of shape. It’s so real.’ I said, ‘In reality, I was just exhausted.’

“I’m a Method actor by fluke.”
