After enjoying moderate to mind-blowing success starring in both Terminator Salvation and Avatar, Sam Worthington has yet another tentpole on the horizon with Clash of the Titans (now being released in 3-D on April 2nd). However, no one has been talking about what’s next for the breakout actor of 2009. Now we don’t have to wonder as Heat Vision confirms a scoop from Latino Review stating that Worthington is in negotiations to play the legendary titular vampire in Alex Proyas’ Dracula Year Zero, which explores the origin of Dracula by meshing vampire mythology with the real life history of Prince Vlad the Impaler.
The film will depict Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war (cue Jason Segel’s Dracula’s Lament). But just because there’s a love story angle don’t think this isn’t a big budget movie. Latino Review’s source says the movie is budgeted at over $100 million. As someone who just hasn’t been impressed by Worthington in any capacity, I have to say that this seems like a risky project, and will probably be the true test to see if audiences actually like the guy. Dracula’s not a simple character despite all of his countless caricatures in pop culture. It’s very difficult to do a vampire flick and not have it be campy. Of course, Alex Proyas is a great filmmaker so maybe he can get the right performance out of him.
